Prostate Cancer is the second most common form of cancer in men, according to the American Cancer Society (ACS). Watermelon is a fruit that is high in lycopene, which has been shown to be beneficial for prostate cancer. 

Lycopene protects the cells from free radicals and slows down the aging of cells. It also helps prevent cell damage caused by carcinogens such as cigarette smoke, pollution, and radiation. This means that if you are already at risk for developing prostate cancer due to other factors, then watermelon can help protect your cells from these harmful substances!

Do you know what lycopene does? Lycopene helps protect cells from damage caused by harmful free radicals and makes them more resistant to oxidative stress that can lead to cell death or chronic degenerative disease. It also may inhibit tumor growth because it blocks certain chemical reactions necessary for abnormal cell division which causes tumors.

Lycopene from watermelon is more than that from many fruits and vegetables that are commonly thought of as containing lycopene.

What is prostate cancer?

Prostate cancer (PCa) is a type of cancer in men where prostate cells grow out of control and spread to other parts of their body – most often nearby organs like the bladder or rectum. It’s not known what causes PCa but risk factors include age over 50 years old; being black with African-American ancestry; family history in father, brother, or son; higher than average levels of testosterone, obesity, and eating meats prepared well done without including vegetables and fruits in your diet.

What is the watermelon?

Watermelon is considered to be a cool and refreshing fruit, which is made up of 91% water. It has a sweet taste that can be tangy or have an acidic flavor depending on the variety.

Watermelons are one of the most popular summertime fruits, but they also grow all year round in Florida, California, and Texas. There are many different varieties such as seedless (the only type grown commercially), “sugar scoop,” “star-shaped” with darker-skinned rinds, etc.

Some watermelons are very big whereas others are three or four times smaller. The size depends on what variety they belong to, the climate in which they grow, and soil fertility. 

Foods to prevent prostate cancer:

According to research from Yale University, prostate cancer is the most common form of cancer in men. In fact, one out of six men will develop prostate cancer at some point during their lifetime. Considering this alarming statistic, it’s important for all men to know what foods can prevent prostate cancer and keep them healthy! Keep reading as we discuss foods that are known to help protect against prostate cancer.

* Dairy products, such as milk and cheese. Milk can reduce the risk of developing prostate cancer by up to 20%.

* Soy isoflavones may also be beneficial for preventing the development of this type of cancer in men. 

*Watermelon, tomatoes, and other red foods have a very powerful antioxidant called lycopene, which has been found to be helpful for preventing prostate cancer.

*Cherries, blueberries, and cranberries are also high in antioxidants and flavonoids that have anti-cancer properties. In addition, they contain anthocyanins with antioxidant activity greater than vitamins A or C.

*Broccoli is a rich source of antioxidants that prevent free radicals from damaging your cells. Antioxidants neutralize the free radicals so that they can’t be unstable and too reactive anymore.

*Tomatoes are rich in lycopene and other antioxidants that prevent prostate cancer.

*Apples are rich in quercetin, an antioxidant that can protect against prostate cancer. Quercetin is also found in berries such as strawberries or blackberries or cherries, tomatoes, onions, celery, kale, and parsley.

*Bell peppers contain lycopene. 100 grams of red bell peppers contain 484 micrograms of lycopene.

*Sweet potatoes are rich in beta-carotene. 100 grams of sweet potato contains 2800 micrograms of beta-carotene, which is 76% of the Recommended Daily Allowance for vitamin A.

*Cauliflower has high levels of selenium and also contains other antioxidants such as glutathione (GSH).

Worst foods for prostate health:

If you want to prevent yourself from getting prostate cancer, you should avoid foods such as:

-Soy products like tofu and soy milk.

-Cow’s dairy – including cow cheese, milk, yogurt, or ice cream.

The reason is that they contain Lactose sugar which can lead to an insulin spike that might be linked to cancer cell growth in the prostate gland.

-Processed foods such as lunch meats and hot dogs. You should also avoid any meat with preservatives (nitrates) if you’re really looking for preventative measures against prostate cancer. Your best bet would be cutting out these high-risk foods altogether from your diet while incorporating more fruits and vegetables into your daily life.”

Yes, watermelon can cure prostate cancer and many other types of cancers because it is fully packed with healthy biochemical compounds including antioxidants, flavonoids, vitamin C, vitamin A, vitamin B1, vitamin B5, and vitamin B6, and lycopene.

In fact, the watermelon has one of the highest concentration levels for lycopene among all fruits! Lycopene is a powerful antioxidant that can help treat prostate cancer by blocking free radicals from destroying cells as well as fighting inflammation in the body.

Antioxidants are believed to protect against unbalanced cell growth (cancer). And they’re found abundantly in plant-based food sources such as vegetables, fruit, and legumes; while processed meats have been shown to increase risks of colon or breast cancers because it contains nitrates which convert into carcinogenic nitrates.

Scientific evidence supports the fact that watermelon is good for the prostate:

Amelia A Assar and colleagues, 2016, investigated the suppression of the nuclear factor kappa B (NF-KB) signaling pathway in prostate cancer and breast cancer cells by lycopene. They found out that lycopene prevented prostate and breast cancer cell growth at concentrations of <1.25 uM. Thus, the cancer inhibitory effects of lycopene are at achievable lycopene concentrations.

Edward Giovannucci, 2002, carried out a review of epidemiological studies of tomatoes, lycopene, and prostate cancer. The researchers found out that most studies reported the correlation between regular consumption of foods rich in lycopene and risk reduction of total prostate cancer.

Recent studies on rats have shown that regular intake of foods fully packed with lycopene such as fruits and vegetables may inhibit the proliferation of cancer cells in your kidneys.

D S Michaud and colleagues, 2000, examined the relationship between the risk of lung cancer and intake of alpha-carotene, beta-cryptoxanthin, beta carotene, lutein, and lycopene. They found out that many carotenoids including lycopene reduced the risk of cancer. Mind you, lycopene is a non-provitamin A carotenoid and is abundant in watermelons.

Some studies have proven that regular consumption of fruits and vegetables not only boosts your immune system and reduces your risk of diabetes, and heart disease, but more so, lowers your risk of certain cancers.

Recent studies have shown that regular intake of foods and drinks rich in lycopene such as tomatoes and watermelon may significantly reduce your risk of prostate cancer.

Ping Chen and colleagues, 2015, carried out a systematic review and meta-analysis of published literature about the relationship between lycopene and the risk of prostate cancer. They found out that significantly high blood levels of lycopene achieved through eating foods rich in lycopene resulted in a very low risk of prostate cancer.

Side effects of eating watermelon:

Although watermelon has so many health benefits including preventing and treating prostate cancer and many other types of cancer, if you eat too much of it, you will suffer from the side effects.

Side effects of eating too much watermelon include:

-nausea, dizziness, and low blood pressure;

-flushing due to the high level of lycopene in watermelons;

-diarrhea.

Conclusion:

Do the following for prevention: have regular checkups with your doctors; avoid smoking or being around smokers; maintain an active lifestyle by exercising regularly. 

The most important thing that we all need to remember about any type of cancer is early detection saves lives! You should get screened at least once every year if not more often depending on how old you are, your lifestyle, your diet, if or not a member of your family line had or has cancer, and also if you are of African American heritage. 

The best defense against prostate cancer may be to eat lots of antioxidant-rich foods such as fruits, and vegetables.
